Our Critical Care Department at Burjeel Royal Hospital is truly critical to the health of Al Ain City. The department uses a multidisciplinary approach to provide the highest level of care to our patients and their families.
The ICU provides specialized care for patients recovering from general surgery, trauma/neurosurgical patients and even for patients experiencing multi-organ system failure. All ICU patients require intensive monitoring around the clock. Registered nurses from our Critical Care department support other departments of the hospital by responding to Code Blue and Rapid Response Team (RRT) calls. Because of the critical state of our patients, and the complex nature of the care we give, we have to set regulations and guidelines for visitors to the ICU.
We provide comprehensive critical care services for patients each year who suffer from life-threatening illnesses such as pneumonia, Acute Lung Injury, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, liver failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, and all kinds of shock. Our critical care teams are supervised by physicians who specialize in critical care medicine and pulmonary disease. Other physicians on our team include internists, gastroenterologists, cardiologists, pulmonologists, surgeons, and radiologists. Members of the physician teams are available continuously in the Medical Intensive Care Unit 365 days/year.
Our Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for managing all medical emergencies. Our unit is equipped with 7 ventilators which are capable of providing a wide range of ventilatory support to all ages from neonates to adults. Our ICU unit has a capacity of 10 separated rooms, each room is equipped with Hill Rum bed (fully electrically operated) plus an isolation room designed according to the standardized international infection control guidelines with electrically operated curtains per each room. Each room is equipped with state of art patient monitor capable of displaying 12 clinical waves at a time. We have 2 invasive cardiac output measuring modules for the accurate diagnosis & follow up of the therapeutic management of all types of shock. We have a good number of BIS Modules which are capable of measuring the actual level of sedation for safe management of the patient who are receiving ventilatory support. Our Nursing Staff is a highly skilled and motivated group that delivers the best possible bedside care to our patients. They are also very concerned with our patients’ comfort, and they are attentive to our patients’ families, who frequently need information and guidance. Our teams are complemented by strong support from Respiratory Therapists, Pharmacists, Nutritionists, Physical and Occupational Therapists, and Social Workers.
We have a specialized program with dedicated physical therapists who use an array of specialized equipment and therapeutic approaches to prevent weakness, depression, and functional loss while our patients remain on life support.
